The Graduate Program in Environmental Systems Analysis and Modeling (PPG-AMSA) of the Geosciences Institute/UFMG was created in 2007, having, until the end of 2020, 140 master’s defenses carried out. In 2018, the doctoral program was created so far, we have 23 enrolled students, and the demand for the selection process for our doctorate has been growing since its creation. In 2020, we had 174 candidates enrolled in two public notices (Public Notice within the scope of the CAPES/EPIDEMIAS project and in the regular selection process).

To create this Graduate Profile, the PPG-AMSA coordination mapped the former students of the program by sending two questionnaires (2016 and 2020) and updating their contacts by consulting their professional profiles on social networks. The following web pages were consulted: Lattes Curriculum, Google Scholar, Researchgate, Orcid, Linkedin, transparency website of the União, State of Minas Gerais, Municipality of Belo Horizonte, in addition to the transparency website of other municipalities, states and public companies when necessary. After this collection on social networks, to complete the information that was missing for 27 graduates, the PPG requested the participation of its mentors to make contact and also sent direct email to the former students. Using these different strategies, of the 140 graduates, information on the 135 graduates’ profile (96%) was collected, and a graduate, Valéria Soares de Melo Franco, passed away in 2019.

The profile of Graduates has information on gender, ethnicity, undergraduate program, continuation of studies after defense, in which institutions the graduates work, performing which duties, among other data on students who defended the master’s degree between 2009 and 2020.

The profile of our graduates regarding their graduation training is very varied, being mostly graduates in Geography and related areas (37%), Environmental, Agronomic and Sanitary Engineering (20%), Biology (12%) and Tourism (5%). As shown in the Table, which lists the graduation of our graduates, the PPG demonstrates its ability to attract graduates from the 3 major areas of knowledge: humanities, exact sciences and biological sciences. In addition to these three main areas of undergraduate studies, there are a variety of other degrees taken by graduates, including journalism, law, physics, actuarial science, psychology, international relations, etc.

The result of the survey carried out at the end of 2020 shows that 22 graduates completed the doctorate. The doctorates were in the following areas of research in different national and international research institutions: Geography (8), Architecture and Urbanism (3), Ecology (3), Agronomy (1), Science of Education (1), Demography (1), Sanitation and Environmental Engineering (1), Production Engineering (1), Crustal Evolution and Natural Resources and Meteorology (1). Of these, 7 were performing post-doctorate at the end of the four-year term, 3 at UFMG, 1 at UFV, 1 at the Centre de Recherche et d’Enseignement des Géosciences de l’Environnement in France, 1 at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic and 1 at University of Coimbra in Portugal.

There are currently 27 graduates with a doctorate in progress in different national and international institutions in the following areas of research: Geography (10), Environmental Systems Analysis and Modeling (6), Sanitation, Environment and Water Resources (3), Remote Sensing (3), Production Engineering (2), Environmental Sciences (1), Computer Science and Zoology.

Of the graduates, 3 are professors at federal universities: Federal University of Ouro Preto/MG, Federal University Goias/GO and Federal University of Minas Gerais/MG. 1 Professor at State University (Santa Catarina State University). 20 are environmental analysts (15%), 19 are higher education and basic education professors (15%). 9 graduates are researchers or coordinators of different research projects (7%) and 5 (4%) are coordinators of training courses and other projects. A group of graduates works in different areas including geoprocessing, public policy analysts, etc.

The destination of 35% of our graduates (47 for a total of 134 responses) are research and educational institutions. 25% work in the private initiative (34) and∙ in the third sector (9 graduates). Our graduates work in a diversified set of governmental bodies: 5% work in autarchy/federal foundation, 5% in autarchies/state foundation. 9% work in Secretariats (4% in Municipal Secretaries and 3% in State Secretariats). About 4% are self-employed, and 5% work in basic education.

The place of action of our graduates is diversified, including most Belo Horizonte and metropolitan area (65%) as well as other Municipalities in Minas Gerais (17%). However, the performance of our graduates is also representative in other states of Brazil and abroad.

13 graduates work in other Brazilian states: Brasília/DF (6), Porto Alegre(3), São Paulo/SP (3) Campinas/SP (1), São José dos Campos/SP, Rio Janeiro/RJ (1), Vitória/ES (1), Goiânia/GO, Florianópolis/SC(1), Boa Vista/Roraima (1), Teresina/Piauí(1),Rio Branco/Acre(1),São Luís/MA.

11 graduates work outside Brazil, most of them in Europe, in countries such as Norway (2), Ireland, Bonn and Berlin in Germany, Coimbra/Portugal and Brno/Czech Republic. A graduate is on the African Continent (Beira/Mozambique), one in North America (Florida), one in South America (Colombia) and another in Australia (Queensland).

A summary of the data for the period from 2008 to 2020:

– 95% operate in the training area;

– 21% work in a public body other than educational;

– 25% work in the private initiative;

– 35% work in the academy in education, research or extension;

– 35% have attended or are attending a doctorate.

During the 2017-2020 four-year period, in addition to the points already presented above, the geo-referencing of the origin and destination of our graduates was also produced, in addition to the geographic location of the survey carried out by students linked to the PPG.

These mappings demonstrate the ability of our PPG to attract students from Europe, Africa and North America and also demonstrate that our graduate students are able to meet the technical demands of the labor market anywhere in Brazil and in the world in the area of environmental sciences.

The destination and performance of graduates proves the quality and excellence of the training they received. The largest legate of PPG-AMSA is a community of students and graduates who are acting in several fronts not only in Brazilian society but also worldwide. We believe that PPG-AMSA legacy is associated with the transformation of the decision-making way by governmental and non-governmental institutions in Brazil. This legacy intends to use the science and use of the scientific method as a way to promote the well-being of society and socioeconomic development without detriment of environmental services and its ecosystem services.

GRADUATES RADAR

– 95% operate in the training area;

– 21% work in a public body other than educational;

– 25% work in the private initiative;

– 35% work in the academy in education, research or extension;
