Profs. Raoni Rajão, Marcelo Costa and the visitors Joanna Perrens, Laura Queiroz and10 Guilherme Ranier
On Monday, March 10, 2025, the Centre for Remote Sensing received a visit from Joanna Perrens, Policy Advisor and Deputy Head of Strategic Engagement for the United Kingdom in Brazil, Laura Queiroz, Director of Government Relations and Trade for the United Kingdom in Minas Gerais, and Guilherme Ranier, Responsible Mining Business Analyst at the UK Consulate.
During the visit, the representatives discussed with professors Raoni Rajão and Marcelo Costa the technologies produced by the laboratory and by the Institutional Center for Technology and Innovation Environmental Modeling (CT Modelagem) using remote sensing, environmental modeling, and geoprocessing techniques that help identify areas of deforestation, fires, and illegal mining. Ways for international governments to use the tools to create action plans to combat the aforementioned illegal practices were discussed. One of the main points of focus was the challenges of tracking illegal gold and how to tackle the problem of illegality.
Based on this visit, the CSR, CT Modelagem and the UK Consulate hope to promote engagement with teams from the British Government to think about new areas of joint action, in addition to establishing bridges so that other consulates and embassies can learn about UFMG’s technologies and use them in potential partnerships. It is worth remembering that the British Government played an important role in supporting projects such as SeloVerde and CAR 2.0 MG.
