The Serra do Cipó National Park was designated in September of 1984 with the mission to protect the region’s natural exuberance. It is located within the municipalities of Jaboticatubas, Santana do Riacho, Morro do Pilar and Itambé do Mato Dentro. With a total area of 33,800 hectares, the Park preserves the region’s biodiversity allowing visitation. To increase the protection, in 1990 it was also created the Environmental Protection Area (APA in Portuguese) of Morro da Pedreira. The APA Morro da Pedreira includes the total area of the Serra do Cipó National Park that together encompasses more than 100,000 hectare, which are home to various endangered species of fauna and flora, unique ecosystems and stunning landscapes.
