The Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, created in 1961, protects an area of 240,611 hectares of altitudinal ecosystems. It is home to several types of vegetation, hundreds of water courses, waterfalls amid landscapes of rare beauty. The Park also preserves old mining areas as part of the local history and became UNESCO Natural World Heritage in 2001. In addition to conservation, the Park goals include scientific research, environmental education and public visitation.
