The Jalapão State Park and the Ecological Station of Serra Geral do Tocantins were both designated in 2001. Together with the Park of headwaters of Parnaíba river, they strategically form the Mosaic of Conservation Units of the Jalapão region that protects headwaters of Parnaíba, and major tributaries of São Francisco and Tocantins river basins.

The Jalapão State Park is the largest state park in Tocantins, covering 160 thousand hectares centered around the municipality of Mateiros. In addition to its unique landscapes and ecosystems, the park has become a major destination for ecotourism.

The Ecological Station of Serra Geral do Tocantins is one of the largest Federal Conservation Units with an area of 707,000 hectares, spanning across the municipalities of Almas, Ponte Alta do Tocantins, Rio da Conceição and Mateiros, in the state of Tocantins, and Formosa do Rio Preto, in the state of Bahia. The Park hosts large tracts of diverse savanna formations.
